The periocular area is one of the first facial zones to show visible signs of ageing: crow's feet, vascular or pigmented dark circles, thin skin and loss of hydration. Periocular microneedling with the BCN Oculare active from Institute BCN is an effective technique for improving the eye contour when performed with maximum care and appropriate parameters.
Anatomical features of the eye contour
Periocular skin is significantly thinner (0.5 mm on the eyelid vs. 2 mm on the rest of the face), with less subcutaneous adipose tissue and a very superficial vascular network. These characteristics determine:
- Higher risk of bruising with excessive depths
- Greater inflammatory response to the same level of aggressiveness as in other areas
- The need to use minimum depths (0.25–0.5 mm)
- Greater client sensitivity during treatment
Indications for the eye contour
Crow's feet
Pericanth wrinkles (crow's feet) are dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated contraction of the orbicularis muscle. Microneedling improves skin quality and elasticity, but deep dynamic wrinkles require complementary treatments. BCN Mimik applied with a dermapen at 0.25–0.5 mm in this area provides an additional tightening effect.
Vascular dark circles
Caused by the transparency of underlying blood vessels through the thin skin of the lower eyelid. Microneedling stimulates dermal thickening (more collagen = more opaque skin) and, combined with BCN Oculare, improves local microcirculation.
Pigmented dark circles
Due to localised hyperpigmentation. They respond to BCN Oculare + vitamin C applied with superficial dermapen (0.25–0.5 mm). Greater caution is required than with other pigmentation areas due to the delicacy of the zone.
Thin, dehydrated skin
Hyaluronic acid applied via very superficial microneedling (0.25 mm) improves hydration and the appearance of the eye contour very effectively.
BCN Oculare: specific active for the eye contour
BCN Oculare is a peptide cocktail formulated specifically for the periocular area. Its active ingredients act on:
- Orbicularis muscle: signalling peptides that reduce contractile activity (anti-crow's feet effect)
- Local microcirculation: improve venous and lymphatic drainage (anti-dark circles effect)
- Periocular dermis: stimulate collagen IV synthesis (basement membrane collagen) to thicken and strengthen lower eyelid skin
Safe technique for the periocular area
Essential parameters
- Absolute maximum depth: 0.5 mm (recommended 0.25–0.5 mm)
- Minimum dermapen speed
- Cartridge with the fewest needles possible
- Never work on the mobile eyelid
- The working area is limited to the lower eyelid and the lateral temporal zone (crow's feet)
Eye protection
Before periocular treatment, place soft plastic protective eye shields ("Eyeshields") under the client's lower eyelid. These protectors shield the eyeball from accidental contact with the device and from the cosmetic active.
Active application
Apply a small amount of BCN Oculare (1–2 drops) with the fingertip to the treatment area. Do not exceed the quantity: the active must not contact the eye. If the active reaches the conjunctiva, rinse immediately with saline solution.
Number of sessions and maintenance
- 3–5 sessions at 3–4 week intervals for initial improvement
- Maintenance: 1 session every 2–3 months
- Always complement with a high-quality eye contour cream in the home routine
